Body Fat & Muscle

We have all heard the quote “muscle weighs more than fat” – Well that is not actually true.
What weighs more, a 100lbs of paper or 100lbs of iron? – they both weigh 100lbs…
If you were to compare 5lbs of body fat to 5lbs of muscle you would find that body fat takes up on average 4 times as much volume compared to muscle.
Below are 2 photos side by side showing you what 20lbs of fat (red play dough) and 20lbs of muscle (purple play dough) look like on the body. Notice where both fat will sit on your body and where muscle will, but much more compact. (Photo credit to Bret Contreras)

How do you know if you are gaining muscle?
1. Your weight will remain the same or similar but your shape is changing (clothes are becoming baggier). Example, you are losing 1lbs of body fat at the same rate you are gaining 1lbs of muscle.
2. You are getting stronger. If you are able to lift heavier weights or do more reps there is an incredibly high probability you are building muscle.
3. You find you are able to eat more and not gain any more weight. Muscle requires so much more energy/calories when compared to body fat. For more detail on this, click here… https://www.jetraining.co.uk/post/weights-vs-cardio
